For why?
Seemingly he has a diary clash, and his absence is absolutely nothing to do with the fact that he wants to avoid the British media!.

The Olympics White Elephant
The white elephant of the London Olympics, ie the stadium, will cost the hard pressed British taxpayer a further £2M on top of the current Olympics "budget" of £12BN.
For why?
It seems that the stadium is not up to Premier League standards, and that the pitch will need to be ripped up (it doesn't have under-soil heating) after the games and replaced at a cost of £2M.
Locog et al keep banging on about the "legacy" of the games.
For sure there will be a legacy, specifically:
- one very large white elephant (the stadium), and
- a large bill (currently estimated at around £12BN plus)

Corruption, Football and Sport
How "surprising" to read that football, that bastion of ethics and philanthropy, has mired itself in yet another scandal, this time involving the Olympics stadium.
The Telegraph reports that a second man has been arrested in connection with police investigations over the Tottenham Hotspur bid to use the stadium after next year's Olympic games.
The arrest follows allegations that investigators working for Tottenham Hotspur illegally obtained private telephone and banking records during the stadium-bidding process.
Spurs deny this.
The arrest comes on top of reports that accountants PKF, the company hired by Tottenham to carry out investigations during the Olympic Stadium bid, have admitted passing on copies of Karren Brady’s illegally obtained telephone records to The Sunday Times.
Allegations of corruption in football and sport, who would have thought it?
I dare say the white elephant of the stadium can be used as a prison after the games, if anyone is found guilty of these allegations.

Another Court Case
The Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) has revealed that it has suspended Dionne Knight, the OPLC's director of corporate services, who has been undertaking paid consultancy work for West Ham United.
Why does this matter?
It matters because West Ham were selected by OPLC to have the stadium after the games, against competition from Tottenham Hotspur.
Ironically, according to the Telegraph, Knight also previously worked for Newham Council, West Ham's partner in the stadium bid.
West Ham are not best pleased with the media slant and insinuations, and have launched legal action against Tottenham Hotspur and the Sunday Times over claims of the "secret" payments.
The concept of "secret cash payments" relating to football is hardly new, if FIFA's soiled reputation is anything to go by. However, if West Ham have been unfairly maligned they are right fight for their reputation. That being said, they should bear in mind that it is not just the "legal susbtsance" of these payments but how they look to everyone else that have done the damage.

Guess Who's Coming To Dinner?
How "nice" to read that Septic Bladder and the "elite" of FIFA will be staying at five star hotels, and enjoy chauffeured vehicles and best seats at the blue riband events during the 2012 London Olympics.
Septic Bladder will have a free chauffeur driven car, on call for 24 hours a day, which will use the special Olympic lanes in London. Bladder's family members will be given special passes that entitles them to all events, and they will be able to stay at the Hilton Hotel on Park Lane.
The Olympics is not about sport, but about money and junkets; FIFA will feel right at home here!

The Legacy of Failure
In 2007 I wrote the following:
"The London ODA continues to heap embarrassment and opprobrium upon itself, not content with allowing the budget to run out of control and not even being able to set a firm price for the stadium, they have now managed to attract derision and scorn for the lousy design of the 2012 London Olympics stadium.
The design was revealed yesterday, with all the usual hype and pr spin usually reserved for a third world dictatorship.
The result?
A very predictable damp squib.
A boring oval shaped stadium that has no defining features of beauty or originality, and worse it will have to down size from a capacity of 80,000 during the games to 25,000 afterwards.
Why?
Simple, there is no need for a stadium in that part of London. At best it will used, maybe, by a football club."
Today the Telegraph states that "the London Olympic board was warned by its own advisers more than three years ago that a Premier League football club would be incompatible with athletics if a permanent track was retained in the main stadium".
In other words, the "legacy" of athletics stadium and football stadium suits no one.
However, there is some light at the end of the tunnel. The fact that West Ham have been relegated from the Premiership, means that they no longer fit the criteria of a "premier League club" as defined by the report.
Problem solved!

West Ham Committed
It seems that there are some cynics who doubt West Ham's ability/willingness to takeover the Olympic stadium after the 2012 games.
They cite West Ham's fragile finances and its relegation from the Premier League.
However, West Ham claim to remain committed.
The Telegraph states that whatever the impact of demotion on the club's finances, it will not changes plans to make the £486M stadium their new home after the London 2012 Games.
"We remain totally committed to it. Our target is to move there in three football seasons time and we would hope that we would return to the Premier League as soon as possible."
No problem then.

In February West Ham won the approval of the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) for taking over the Olympic stadium after the 2012 games.
However, Tottenham Hotspur their rivals for the stadium were not happy and last month launched an application for a judicial review into Newham Council's role in arranging a £40M loan to finance West Ham's move to the stadium.
The Telegraph reports that Spurs have taken further action and have asked the High Court to start a separate judicial review into the roles of several other key parties involved in awarding West Ham the stadium.
A Tottenham statement read:
"The club has today sought permission from the High Court to bring a claim against the Olympic Park Legacy Company Limited, the Mayor of London, the Minister for Sport and the Olympics and the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government for judicial review of a series of decisions made by them to appoint a joint bid by the London Borough of Newham and West Ham United Football Club as preferred bidder in a competition for the lease of the Olympic Stadium.
As previously reported, the club continues to hold discussions with both local and national government bodies in order to seek to agree a feasible stadium solution."

The Stadium Debacle
Despite Lord Coe chastising the Spurs bid for the post Olympics stadium and, seemingly, coming out in favour of West Ham's bid (on the basis that they will leave some form of athletics legacy) it is interesting to note that 18 months after winning the bid to host the games the Olympic Board had in fact rejected both clubs.
The Telegraph reports that both bids were rejected at the time, because the Board wanted no diminution of the athletics "legacy".
Time and financial reality often crush naive dreams, and it seems now that the Board will have to accept a bid from one of these two football clubs.

The Jolly Junket
It seems that London's 5 star hotels, such as the Dorchester, will be overwhelmed with booking requests from the "great, the good and the hangers on" of the Olympics during the Olympics 2012.
Locog has received more applications for accommodation from "bigwigs" in the Olympics movement, FIFA and embassies than there are rooms available.
Maybe some will have to "slum it" in 4 and 3 star hotels then?

Tottenham Hotspurs' recent bid to move into the Olympic Stadium after the 2012 games has one rather significant problem, it does not include any provision for an athletics track.
Spurs do not want a track, because it will detract from having a "perfect" football stadium.
All very well, maybe. However, London 2012 won its Olympic bid on the basis of a promise to the International Olympic Committee that part of the legacy of the games would be an athletics track capable of staging major events.
Who will blink first?

Legacy
The Guardian reports that the Olympics Minister, Tessa Jowell, has called upon West Ham to bid for the Olympics stadium.
All very well, however if West Ham were to bid and win the bid this may well conflict with the promised Olympics legacy (as outlined in the original bid that won the UK the right to hold the 2012 Olympics).
For why?
The stadium capacity needs to be around 25,000, in order to accommodate the athletics legacy pledged to the IOC in London's bid.
However, this is not a capacity that would suit West Ham.
Who will win?
The bid that offers the most money.

Jowell Contradicts Johnson
Tessa Jowell has contradicted Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, over the legacy of the London Olympic Stadium.
Johnson said last week that it would be "very foolish to rule out" retaining at least a 50,000 capacity as England bids to host the 2018 World Cup
However, Jowell claims that it will not be a potential venue for the 2018 World Cup.
"We don't need another football stadium, we have got Wembley.
Funding the maintenance of a stadium between 2012 and 2018 is quite a stretch, so I think we will continue to develop the plan that we have for the Olympic Stadium."
The one small problem with Jowell blocking this is that she will be leaving Parliament at the next election, some two years before the Games. The final decision over the legacy of the stadium will therefore be made by someone else.

IOC Warns Against White Elephant Legacy
The head of the IOC, Jacques Rogge, has stirred up a hornets' nest by publicly stating that London 2012's main stadium does not need an athletics legacy.
He told the BBC that the main concern for London 2012's organisers should be to avoid leaving behind "white elephants".
Quote:
"If the best solution is to transform the track into something else then we would be in favour of that.
We had the same situation in Atlanta where the Olympic Stadium was changed into a baseball stadium, which kept an interest for sport.
We don't have problems with that. I don't want to enter into specifics but we don't want to leave white elephants."
This of course means that the stadium can be turned into a football stadium afterwards. All very well, but hardly the "legacy" that the government had promised.

Reports that the London Olympic stadium will be demolished after the 2012 Games, and replaced by a Premier League football ground, have been "denied" by the London Development Agency (LDA).
They would of course deny those reports, as demolition would blow an enormous hole in their claim that there will be a "legacy" of the games. It has already been mooted on this site in November that the stadium will be used by a football club.
Boris Johnson's office has stated that he was "not aware of any plans to demolish the stadium."
That of course does not mean that there are not plans to demolish the stadium.
The LDA's "denial" states that "no stone had been left unturned" in exploring all the options for the venue, and the drawing up of a range of possible scenarios was part and parcel of the legacy planning process.

The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Jacques Rogge, has issued a thinly disguised "hurry up" message to the London Olympics organisers.
Rogge told the BBC that London "is doing OK", but must focus on delivering the Games on time.
Quote:
"We urge them to work as soon as possible and to prepare today for the unforeseen of tomorrow."
Hardly a ringing endorsement of progress made so far.
Rogge also said that he remained optimistic that a permanent tenant for the London Olympic stadium will be found.
The current legacy plan is to reduce the stadium's capacity from 80,000 to 25,000 in 2013, and use it as a multi-sport venue with athletics and community facilities at its heart.
However, LOCOG need a football or rugby club to become the "anchor tenant" and thus subsidise the stadium. The trouble being that the plans for the stadium do not include a roof for the majority of the seats.
